Juan Luis Guerra

CONCERT REVIEW 2012

JUAN LUIS GUERRA
A SON de GUERRA TOUR

The floor of Melbourne Convention Centre shook to the collective merengue march of over 2000 fans of Juan Luis Guerra on Saturday night.

In Sydney a further thousand more packed the Olympic Park Stadium - the biggest turn out in history for a Latin music event of his genre.

The concert was on for young and old. Mum's and Dad's and their adult children grooved together.

There was dancing in the aisles, hands in the air and the strains of an excited crowd singing along to songs spanning Guerra’s nearly 30 year career.

The musical talents of the tall singer wearing his trademark hat were clear for all to see and hear as he effortlessly switched between bachata, bolero, salsa and merengue while his 20 piece band mixed in distinctive Afro Cuban and Caribbean rhythms.

Songs such as La Rosa and Bachata en Fukuoka had people singing along to every word while songs like Como Yo received a huge reception from the mostly Latin American crowd.

Admittedly, some die-hard fans may have wanted to hear more of Guerra’s songs from earlier in his career but with so many to choose, not everything could be included.

At one point, Guerra left the stage and handed it over to his band, known as 4.40. The tempo of the concert didn’t drop at all as the percussionists put on scintillating solos.

Guerra returned and continued to bounce around the stage like someone half his age but the best was yet to come.

An acoustic encore performance of his hit Ojala Que Llueva Café left the crowd more than satisfied and knowing they had seen one of the best Latin American acts to visit our shores in some time.

Review By Alexander Cork. April 2012

ON THE ARTIST:

JUAN LUIS GUERRA (born June 7, 1957) is a singer, song writer and producer from the Dominican Republic who has sold over 30 million records, and won numerous awards including 12 Latin Grammy Awards, two Grammy Awards, and two Latin Billboard Music Awards. He recently won 3 Latin Grammy Awards in 2010, including Album of the Year.

He is one of and considered the most internationally recognized Latin artists of recent decades. His pop style of merengue, salsa, bachata and bolero and Afro-pop/Latin fusion has garnered him considerable success throughout Latin America.

He does not limit himself to one style of music; instead, he incorporates diverse rhythms like merengue, bolero-bachata, balada, salsa and rock and roll. "Ojala Que Llueva Cafe" ("I Wish It Would Rain Coffee") is one of his most critically acclaimed self-written and composed pieces. A remix of "La Llave de Mi Corazon" ("The key to my heart") with Taboo from The Black Eyed Peas is also an example of his fusion of genres.

Juan Luis Guerra has been described as the most anticipated event of 2012, so don't miss out.
