| Cruzao Arepa Bar is an exciting new Latin American restaurant and bar located on Brunswick Street, in the heart of Fitzroy. It is the first venue of its kind in Melbourne, serving up authentic Venezuelan corn-based arepas, traditional tapas-style pasapalos and a unique selection of tropical cocktails, all to the background of the fascinating musical heritage of Latin America.
Just in case you don’t know, an arepa is a round, flat, naturally gluten-free corn pocket, cooked on a hot grill until golden crispy, and filled with a range of healthy, tasty options, including carne mechada – slow cooked shredded beef in a tomato salsa, pernil – pork leg marinated in garlic and red wine, and domino – slow cooked black beans with cheese, among others.
Arepas are an essential ingredient of the culture of Venezuela, eaten by millions every day. At Cruzao Arepa Bar, all the fillings are prepared using traditional recipes and served freshly cooked with their healthy and affordable authenticity intact.
Apart from arepas, Cruzao’s menu offers delicious pasapalos (what we, in Venezuela, call tapas) such as tequeños (crispy cheese sticks wrapped in wheat dough), tostones (plantain slices served with cheese and a garlic sauce) and empanaditas (small filled corn pastries with a flaky crust); authentic cachapas (sweet corn pancakes with various fillings), as well as its namesake soup – Cruzao - a rich broth with chicken, beef & vegetables, garnished with coriander, fresh salads, a selection of unique traditional Venezuelan desserts and a fantastic cup of coffee, including the guayoyo picao (coffee, chocolate & rum).
Cruzao’s drink selection includes natural fruit juices, papelón con limón (a refreshing sugar cane and lemon drink) and coconut water, and features rum and cachaca as the core spirits of a unique cocktail menu that includes Mojito – often referred to as “the best Mojite I’ve ever had…”, Cuba Libre, Guarapita, Piña Colada and Caipirinha, among others.
