EDWIN VILLALOBOS & LEIDY CAROLINA GIRALDO
Recognized as a top Latin dance competitor, performer and instructor throughout Colombia and abroad, Edwin and Leidy Carolina are part of Swing Latino, one of the most important dance studios in the international salsa circuit, established since 1999 by Luis Eduardo “El Mulato” Hernandez and winner of more than five international titles and 3 world Salsa Championships.

SWING LATINOS
was born of a group of young people on the street with no plans for their future; they lived on the street-corners in the San Pedro Claver district, where violence was the basic way to achieve notoriety. It was the feared gang of the “Bats”.

Then someone called Luis Eduardo Fernandez, also known as El Mulato, a lover of the dance and of missions with some social meaning, redirected them from the fate that their own social condition and marginality had accidentally caused, and channeled this same gang into a constructive project: the creation of the salsa dance group with great ambitions.

GOOD READING: The inspiring life story of Colombian street gang calling Salsa a savior for many - El Mulato (Luis Eduardo Fernandez) is a born leader, and he is a child of that same gang. He knows the street codes and the way that society works for those young people, their values and anti-values, and he wins them over for a constructive project through dance.

Luis Eduardo Fernandez
He exercises leadership, he imposes an almost military discipline in his work, the quest for perfection and excellence, equipped with an immense talent, he stands violence on its head to turn it into artistic expression, a stamp of their identity and origin. Swing´s dance is energetic, challenging, strong and demolishing, as well as being precise and brimming with enthusiasm.

With the triumphs of Swing, legions of young people have come to the School and to the Dance Company which represents it, and today has more than 60 members. These dancers have adopted this level of demand, work and discipline, to arm themselves against violence drugs, and have become aware of the value of difficulty and recognition. They feel that they are artistes, they are genuine professionals in dance, and they know that work is a basic condition of success in any discipline.

Behind a Dance School there is a major social project, in which the value and talent of the individual makes itself visible and increase self-esteem, recognized and valued by others, to give them a projection in life. Many young people who have passed through Swing are today dancing in other countries of the world, and have overcome the limitations of the society which excludes them from opportunity, and the chance to be part of the future.
